Male Hair Loss Treatment

The first thing you need to know is that male hair loss is different than female hair loss. For males, hair loss follows specific patterns and that’s why we talk about male pattern baldness. In most cases men lose hair on their scalp and more precisely on the top of the head in a circular fashion, or through the sides of their head, or even above the forehead line. This phenomena includes thinning of hair on the whole of the scalp, but generally focused on a particular area. On the other hand, women hair loss tends to be all over the scalp and there is therefore no typical pattern. As a consequence treatment for men hair loss will be different than the one for women.

The above paragraph is very important as if you are a man you clearly need to choose a product for your treatment which is specific for men otherwise you wont have any good results. Choose products which are for male scalps. So here are below the various treatments available for hair loss and which will enhance hair growth or will act as hair replacement.

1) Minoxidil is the treatment for men. It is the one which every male starts with. In the US you can buy the Rogaine product where as in other countries it is name Regaine. Basicaly it is a hair tonic, which needs to be applied all over the scalp. Minoxidil for men does not have any major side effects apart from sometimes causing itchy sensations on the scalp till the scalp gets used to the product. Rogaine can be found as liquid or as foam.

2) Finasteride is another hair loss treatment product which is sold under the brand name Propecia and is available as tablets. This product alters your hormonal balance and therefore helps increasing your hair growth. This is due to the fact that once you get older you do not have as much testosterone as when you were young. Finasteride helps rectifying the balance of your body to help you increase your hair growth. This product has less side effects than Rogaine.

3) Other treatment methods exist nowadays some which are a lot more complex but somehow very effective. These include hair weaving also known as hair transplant, or hair replacement methods. These cosmetic methods require in most cases a surgical procedure and do not make your hair grow naturally. They are good for people who just care about appearance and don’t mind about not having real hair.

Common Reasons for Hair Loss

Hair loss torment is something that always existed and which gets people very anxious. Various reasons exist which can explain why hair loss occurs and why hair replacement surgery in clinics is needed. In fact individuals can suffer from different types of hair loss due to different reasons. Below is a list of what is in my opinion the most common reasons for hair loss.

1) Deficiency in Proteins and Iron
This is probably the most common reason. The bad side of this particular deficiency is that you start loosing hair quickly after your body has a deficiency. Therefore you cannot really prevent it unless you check regularly your protein and iron levels. Unfortunately, hair falling starts only when the body recognizes the deficiency. Generally this occurs around 3 months after the deficiency. The solution to this hair loss is to take proteins and iron in order to get back to a normal level.

2) Bad hair care
One of the main causes of hair loss is improper hair care. If you excessively take care of your hair and use a lot of brushing, braids, do ponytails this is not good for your hair. For example ponytails pull a lot on your hair which is not very good for them. Furthermore using too many shampoos or chemical products such as dyes can result in serious hair loss. So be careful!

3) Vitamin A Overdose
An overdose of vitamin A can occur and cause hair loss if you take vitamin supplements on your own without checking that the amount is correctly balanced for you. That is why it is important to always go and see a doctor when taking vitamins or minerals in order not to have an overdose. Do not eat vitamin supplements unless prescribed by the doctor. If you are having a diet, make sure with your doctor that is correctly balanced and will not cause an overdose.

4) Therapy against depression
When you have a depression, in most cases you have to follow a therapy where you will have to take medication. Taking this medication is essential for people with severe depression. The side effects of such medication and therapy can lead to heavy hair loss. Ask advice to your doctor about which medicines are the best.

5) Thyroid deregulation
If you have problems related to your thyroid you may notice some severe hair loss. If this happens go and see your doctor to get the most appropriate treatment.

6) Being Pregnant
After being pregnant it is frequent to see women lose hair generally three months after the baby birth. This is due to the fact that a women experiences high level of hormones during the pregnancy period. These hormones help keeping the hair intact, but unfortunately when the level of hormones comes back to a more standard level these hairs tend to fall before a normal hair growth cycle restarts.

7) Your level of DHT
If you have an excessive level of DHT you can have yet again some hair loss. This happens as DHT prevents nutrients to go to your hair, and as a consequence causes hair loss.

8) Certain Medications
Some medicines such as those used for arthritis or blood pressure for example can cause hair loss. If this happens go and see a doctor so that he can give you an appropriate treatment.

Many other reasons exist which can cause hair loss, but they are less frequent, so I will not talk about them. Whenever you have hair loss, always go and see your doctor so that he can give you the appropriate treatment for your hair!

The Different Hair Replacement Systems Available

Hair loss is a problem many people get concerned with. For example in the US it is said that 40 million men and 20 million women are concerned by baldness. In most cases hair loss is due to heriditary reasons (condition called androgenetic alopecia). Men have been studying for over thirty years methods on how to replace hair. Various hair replacement systems have appeared. I will be giving a quick and short overview of the various hair treatments available.

The first hair treatment system is non-surgical. It consists in taking Minoxidil orally. Even though Minoxidil was originally made to treat high blood pressure it has been approved that it is a valid method to regrow hair. Various studies have found out that 26% of men aged between 18 and 49, who used Minoxidil saw a moderate to dense hair regrowth, and 33% a small hair regrowth. For this method to work it is necessary to take Minoxidil twice a day. Nevertheless it is always recommend to see a doctor before using to make sure you are suitable for using it.

The other hair replacement systems that exist require surgery. Two of the most used systems are hair transplant and scalp reduction. Hair transplant is quite simple to understand as it simply consists in moving hair from an area with a high density of hair to bald areas of your scalp. To be able to use this method you need to have a high density of hair on the sides and on the back of your scalp. The other method called scalp reduction consists in removing large parts of bald scalp but stretching parts of your scalp where you have the most of your hair.

Another technique used in for hair replacement is the flap technique but it is the method which has the most complications so i would not recommend it. It consists in moving and rotating parts of the scalp to other places (back to front for example etc...).

So as you can see different hair replacement systems exist. Some are more risky and delicate than others, where as some have better results than others. My recommendation is always to go and see several specialists before taking any decision. In my next articles i will be looking in more details at the various hair replacement systems described.
