The Different Hair Replacement Systems Available

Hair loss is a problem many people get concerned with. For example in the US it is said that 40 million men and 20 million women are concerned by baldness. In most cases hair loss is due to heriditary reasons (condition called androgenetic alopecia). Men have been studying for over thirty years methods on how to replace hair. Various hair replacement systems have appeared. I will be giving a quick and short overview of the various hair treatments available.

The first hair treatment system is non-surgical. It consists in taking Minoxidil orally. Even though Minoxidil was originally made to treat high blood pressure it has been approved that it is a valid method to regrow hair. Various studies have found out that 26% of men aged between 18 and 49, who used Minoxidil saw a moderate to dense hair regrowth, and 33% a small hair regrowth. For this method to work it is necessary to take Minoxidil twice a day. Nevertheless it is always recommend to see a doctor before using to make sure you are suitable for using it.

The other hair replacement systems that exist require surgery. Two of the most used systems are hair transplant and scalp reduction. Hair transplant is quite simple to understand as it simply consists in moving hair from an area with a high density of hair to bald areas of your scalp. To be able to use this method you need to have a high density of hair on the sides and on the back of your scalp. The other method called scalp reduction consists in removing large parts of bald scalp but stretching parts of your scalp where you have the most of your hair.

Another technique used in for hair replacement is the flap technique but it is the method which has the most complications so i would not recommend it. It consists in moving and rotating parts of the scalp to other places (back to front for example etc...).

So as you can see different hair replacement systems exist. Some are more risky and delicate than others, where as some have better results than others. My recommendation is always to go and see several specialists before taking any decision. In my next articles i will be looking in more details at the various hair replacement systems described.
